The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust aims to facilitate the education and
employment of promising youth of colour in the Louis Trichardt area of Limpopo.
Sumbandila identifies promising young students, from low income backgrounds,
and provides them with support which is two-fold:
The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust was initiated in 2007 by Leigh Bristow, a past Head Mistress of Ridgeway College and now Executive Director of the Trust. The scholarship programme was developed with a focus on supporting youth in ways that enable them to have access to an excellent education and continuous support throughout their educational journey. It started with 9 students in 2007, a number which has since escalated as the demand for such an initiative is very high (and continues to increase), paired with the commitment of students to complete the programme (rather than experiencing high numbers of drop-outs.) Whilst the original scholarships were specifically for Ridgeway College, they have been extended to include Trichardt College, a superb Model-C school, as well.
It has 3 programmes which focus on “wrap-around support” for learners involved in their programmes ie:
MRA Insurance Brokers proposed that the JDF supports Sumbandila.

Literacy Development
The over-arching aim of the Rally to Read is to develop the reading and writing
skills of learners in remote schools – to ensure they are equipped to cope with
secondary school education and positioned to craft their own careers.

Agricultural employment development
The core objective of RecruitAgri is to empower local youth through skills
development and facilitating employment specifically within the agricultural
sector.

Education Upliftment Programme
Uplands Outreach is an educational initiative of Uplands NPC, dedicated to improving learning outcomes in rural Mpumalanga. Established in 1994, the organisation focuses on collaboration, continuous learning, and measurable results, Uplands Outreach works to strengthen education at every level and create lasting change within the communities it serves.
WISEUP
Women in Sports Education Upliftment Programme
WISEUP exists to uplift young girls through sport and education. Their key focus is on facilitating the successful participation of young black women, from Langa and Khayelitsha, in sports tournaments including the Rustenburg Girls High School Champions Cup.
