The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust was initiated in 2007 by Leigh Bristow, a past Head Mistress of Ridgeway College and now Executive Director of the Trust. The scholarship programme was developed with a focus on supporting youth in ways that enable them to have access to an excellent education and continuous support throughout their educational journey. It started with 9 students in 2007, a number which has since escalated as the demand for such an initiative is very high (and continues to increase), paired with the commitment of students to complete the programme (rather than experiencing high numbers of drop-outs.) Whilst the original scholarships were specifically for Ridgeway College, they have been extended to include Trichardt College, a superb Model-C school, as well.
It has 3 programmes which focus on “wrap-around support” for learners involved in their programmes ie:
- Full residential scholarships at Ridgeway College and, at Louis Trichardt College,
- Saturday and holiday schools (“Exceptionals”)
- University admission and support (to enable students to register and start their tertiary education at pace.)
MRA Insurance Brokers proposed that the JDF supports Sumbandila.
