stepping stone hospice:
palliative care services

Stepping Stone attends to the physical, psychosocial, spiritual and social needs – from diagnosis to the end of life – and provides families with support, both during and after the journey. This care is provided by a team of doctors, professional palliatively-trained nurses, therapists, social workers, spiritual counsellors and volunteers.

Stepping Stone’s key mission is to provide holistic palliative care to patients from within the Alberton area (Gauteng), whose life-limiting conditions no longer respond to curative treatment; as well as enable individuals and their families to deal as positively as possible with the occurrence of terminal illness of a family member.

stepping stone hospice: palliative care services

The Stepping Stone NPC was established in 2013 by CEO Tersia Burger. The funding contributed to them by the Jacana Development Foundation is being used for their Baby Care section which currently has 8 babies being treated, as they face the end of their lives. The cost to the Hospice is R2 750 per day, for the medication and care – and the funding is therefore urgently required.

Funding, donated to the JDF, was mobilised by Keeper through the organising of an annual sports event, attended by others in the Insurance Industry. The funds raised were donated to the JDF, for it to use in support of a cancer-related cause, the Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services.

The Keeper Memorial Bowls Day (2025) report

Pirates Bowls Club, in the jacaranda filled streets of Johannesburg, hosted The Keeper Memorial Bowls Day which is held, annually, in memory of Andy Jack, Bob Mallac and Leigh Hammond. Insurers from around the country were invited to enter teams, donate prizes and make other contributions on the day. It’s a day of industrywide camaraderie and the insurance industry really showed up for a great cause.

  • All involved contributed handsomely and this year the day was supported by Bryte, Hollard, Santam, Lombard Human Risks, Leppard Underwriting, iToo, Horizon Marine, Sapphire Risk Transfer, Guardrisk, Camargue Underwriting Managers, One and Gage Car Hire.
  • Over R80 000.00 was raised and then donated to the Jacana Development Foundation, to manage in support of the Hospice.

This year Bryte was the bowls winner but the Hospice patients and their families will ultimately be the true winners.

Keeper proposed that the JDF supports Stepping Stone Hospice.
