MasiSports promotes thriving children, schools and communities:
- 2 schools are their key recipients of support: Ukhanyo Primary School (initial, 1 850 learners) and Masi High School (more recently included, 1 580 learners).
- It works in partnership with NPOs, businesses, Sports Clubs, Universities etc
- Vince van der Bijl, a well-known SA Cricketer during the 1970 and 80’s, is the Founding partner and driver of MasiSports.
Sport is regarded as the core driver of change in these schools:
Its unique approach commenced with the establishment of innovative sports fields / venues within the very constrained space of government / township school premises.
The programmes are divided into 1) Physical Education & Life Skills and 2) After-school Sport:
- All primary school learners participate in the Physical Education and Life Skills programme activities every week.
- After-school sports supported are: athletics, netball, soccer, cycling, cricket, chess and dance.
- As an introduction to each sports coaching event, the coaches provide their players with a 20 min life skills session.
MasiSports supports the employment of coaches to oversee these sports in both schools, and also equips educators to be sports coaches, for after school sports for the learners. Sports equipment is also provided to the learners / participants.
The JDF’s financial support (2025/26) is being used to…
- Help fund the Literacy Development training programme, offered to the MasiSports coaches; and
- Support the relatively new MasiSports Cycle Club.
STP Intasure proposed that the JDF supports MasiSports.
