rally to read:
literacy development

The over-arching aim of the Rally to Read is to develop the reading and writing skills of learners in remote schools – to ensure they are equipped to cope with secondary school education and positioned to craft their own careers, thereafter.

Such schools generally face unique challenges including inadequate facilities and resources and under-prepared teachers. The Rally provides them with support in both these areas.

RALLY TO READ: LITERACY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

The Rally was established in 1997 and is in the process of rolling out its 26th consecutive year of championing literacy in rural primary schools. The Rally programme is implemented by the Read Educational Trust which selects excellent quality reading materials for the grade R-7 learners; and provides in-person support and training to the teachers of these schools. Each carefully-selected cluster of schools is supported for a 3-year period, ensuring that the programme becomes embedded in the schools and continues to have an impact into the future.

Clusters of schools in various provinces are supported for these 3 consecutive years through:

  • The annual delivery of reading materials to schools which largely lack such resources, and
  • The provision of expert training and support from an expert READ Educational Trust Trainer. Training workshops are conducted and in-classroom support and mentorship are core to this support.

Sponsors work collaboratively, providing both funding and practical support in helping to deliver educational materials to the cluster of difficult-to-access and remote schools in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Bay Union Insurance Brokers proposed that the JDF supports Rally to Read.
